Vasectomy on the occasion of World Vasectomy Day
A short history
In 2013, American film director Jonathan Stack and American urologist Dr Doug Stein initiated and co-founded the World Vasectomy Day Organisation (WVDO). Its aim is to popularise vasectomy, especially in less developed countries with huge population growth, and in countries where, due to prejudice and misunderstanding of what vasectomy is, it is hardly available. WVDO also aims to inspire people to join the worldwide debate on family planning.
In 2013 the World Vasectomy Day organisation not only achieved its planned goal of recruiting 100 doctors from 25 countries and engaging them to perform 1,000 vasectomies within 24 hours. In addition, WVD’s activities resonated widely in the world media, reflected in over 25,000 publications of various kinds. Some of these were multimedia publications in the form of blogger commentary and articles published by journalists writing for online portals.
World Vasectomy Day also attracted the attention of traditional media in the form of dozens of television programmes – some broadcast vasectomies live from a TV studio in front of an audience (behind a screen), while others, like TVP (Pytanie na Śniadanie), produced their own studio programmes with invited guests. WVDO’s activities were also reflected in a huge series of press articles around the world.
Free vasectomy in Poland in 2014
On 7 November 2014 another World Vasectomy Day took place.
Around the world, several hundred doctors performed about 1,500 vasectomies. Many of them donated part of the proceeds from the procedures to support WVD. In many centres the event was recorded and is available online and in selected media (http://worldvasectomyday.org).
Here in Poland, where vasectomy is not very popular, at ZdrOva in Warsaw we decided, as in the previous year, to perform 5 free vasectomies. Three of them took place in front of a camera (film below). //www.youtube.com/embed/qp5uYmR9GRs
We would like to thank the patients who agreed to take part in the programme and in popularising vasectomy as male contraception. Their participation may encourage other men, especially in overpopulated developing countries, to take responsibility, plan their families consciously, and free women from the burden of responsibility and the possible consequences of its absence.
