Vasectomy reversal – what it is and where fertility can be restored in men after sterilisation, i.e. after a vasectomy – the reversible male contraception.
What is it?
A vasectomy reversal is an operation to undo the effects of a vasectomy. It can be compared to “unblocking” blocked “tubes” – the vas deferens. These tubes were previously deliberately “blocked” during the male sterilisation procedure, i.e. the vasectomy.
Vasectomy reversal is a microsurgical operation. As with vasectomy itself, there are many methods of restoring the patency of the vas deferens. Some operations are performed in an operating theatre using surgical microscopes.
The reversal performed using Dr Douglas Stein’s method is carried out on an outpatient basis, i.e. outside the operating theatre, in an ordinary procedure room, outside a hospital. It is performed under local anaesthesia. Dr Stein’s method uses high-quality, powerful surgical loupes rather than an operating microscope. Although the operation takes a long time – about 4-5 hours – the patient remains fully conscious and sober :), has full contact with the doctor, can talk and feels nothing.
Dr Stein performs vasectomies using a slightly modified method, so that if the patient changes his mind and wants more children in the future, the operation to restore patency has the best chance of success.
Where in Poland can fertility be restored after a vasectomy
One of the few clinics already operating in Poland that perform vasectomy reversal, i.e. restoring fertility after male sterilisation, is the ZdrOva clinic. At ZdrOva in Warsaw, the operation using Dr Stein’s method is performed by Dr Robert Kulik.
Dr Robert Kulik obtained a certificate of competence twice: in January 2018 and again in April 2019, from Dr Douglas Stein in Tampa, Florida, USA.
Dr Stein is the director of the Vasectomy & Reversal Centers of Florida, a member of the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology, and Director of International Development of No Scalpel Vasectomy International.
