An Act of Love – Vasectomy as proof of love
On 13 November 2015, the central celebrations of World Vasectomy Day took place in Bali, Indonesia. That year’s motto was “Vasectomy as an Act of Love”. The central hub, receiving reports from all over the world via Skype and re-broadcasting them live after processing, was the town of Gianyar.
The aim of the mission was to perform free vasectomies for poor patients (fathers of numerous offspring) and, perhaps more importantly, to teach local doctors how to perform vasectomies using the latest method – no scalpel, no needle, no stitches – and how to use needle-free anaesthesia.
Mission participants met several times with local authorities, journalists and even an imam, according to whom Islam permits vasectomy because it is a reversible method.
