Vasectomy – semen analysis after the procedure
As reported by Science Translational Medicine, engineers have developed a smartphone-based semen testing system. The single-use cost of a test is around 6 US dollars. However, a special attachment is needed to perform the test. The attachment costs about 50 US dollars. This portable semen-testing device (e.g. after a vasectomy) can be ordered online with 2 slides for performing 2 tests.
The manufacturer has demonstrated that the semen test results agree with other automated semen analysis systems – and not only after vasectomy. According to the manufacturer, the device has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
This method appears much simpler than the conventional semen analysis method. Perhaps in the future patients will be able to use it themselves at home.
